Keller Program Offers Rapid Access for Paramedics

Residents who want to provide the Keller Fire Department with easy access to their homes in case of emergency have a new opportunity to do so thanks to the expansion of a program that has long been successful among commercial property owners.

“When every second counts, this system allows our firefighter/paramedics a quicker and safer way to get inside than breaking doors or windows,” Fire Marshal Debra Crafton said. “This is particularly important for residents with mobility issues or who may be home alone when they call in a medical emergency.”

A KNOX Rapid Entry System is standard for commercial facilities throughout town. Required by city code, the system uses small boxes installed on the exterior of buildings accessible only to the fire department to provide keys to emergency responders. Keller is among the first 20 cities in the state to expand the program so that residents can choose to install similar devices at home.

“The Knox Home Box offers the same security features as the original used by commercial properties, but is installed at a resident’s front door,” Crafton said. “The system is an easy, quick and cost effective way to help us help you.”
